Hope this ok here not sure where to put it.
Brother in law with dementia is in a home. He has had stuff in storage for years and years and apparently the payments have stopped and the storage company rang my husband, his brother, and wanted to know if he was willing to pay....no, he didn't even know his brother had given them his number.
Anyway they said they would just clear it out and dispose of the stuff.
What I wonder is after they have recouped their charges, if there is any money over what happens to it?

They won't recover enough to cover the charges, therefore there will be no surplus to return.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.0

As said it's not at all likely. I don't know but I'd guess the terms on the storage contract say that the property reverts to the storage company if money isn't paid.givememoney wrote: »

If you think there's anything valuable in there then you'd have to pay up and move it.
If you do think there's high value stuff there and can't afford the storage then you'd need to seek advice from the CAB or similar,.0 -
How much is it?
Isn't he vaguely intrigued what's in there?1 -
Try watching Storage Wars, there is also one based in the UK but I can't remember what it is called.0

Before my BIL was struck down with dementia he was always an unusual character. Although he lived alone he wanted to do up his house so put loads of stuff in storage. There it stayed costing him an arm and a leg for something like the last ten years or possibly longer. He never did do up the house and now he would be incapable of doing anything about any of it.0 -

I used to watch the US one avidly , loved it and their wild estimates of what they were going to sell things for! The UK one though is awful, it's all set up for the camera (the US one was as well to some extent) they don't even always use storage units, just pre prepared lockers on an empty lot. I have met several of the people on the UK one as they did actually use some proper 'dealers'.
I'm also on several US forums connected to ebay and some flippers on there do still buy units and I'm always interested to see what they get.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. An elderly relative recently moved into a care home and we had to sell her 1-bed flat. There were quite a number of useable items (immaculate leather electric recliner seats, almost new washer/dryer, etc) in it.
The estate agent said that they could get it cleared for £500. Eventually I found a man & van outfit who did it for £50, but the days when people paid you money for house (or, I guess, storage) clearance are long gone.Philip0 -
UK one has to be set up. Most, if not all, auctioneers would move the stock to their premises and sell it from there. A blind sale is silly. My guess is that in the US there's some law that prevents them moving it and they have to sell it on site.I used to watch the US one avidly , loved it and their wild estimates of what they were going to sell things for! I cleared most "big stuff" myself through Ebay and Gumtree and got about £900 for furniture - some of it went to dealers who would tart it up and sell it on - and the local recycling/reuse place or charity shops took all the small stuff that hadn't gone to friends/neighbours.
"Immaculate and almost new" has value - sometimes a lot less than one might hope for, but it will usually sell. I'd only pay for clearance if there was a lot of "brown" furniture or if the house actually needed to be cleared of rubbish.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
