Does a credit card refund count as payment?

Let’s say my November credit card statement is £100, which has to be paid in January.

In December I do some more shopping, say £50 of new spending.

I then get a £30 refund on something. Does this go towards paying off the older balance of £100? Or does it merely reduce the latest spending down from £50 to £20?

I think in years gone by the refunds *didn’t* count as payment towards an older balance but I’ve read that this may be different these days?

You still need to make at least the minimum payment.
  • Sometimes yes. Sometimes know.

Some will adjust the direct debit and some won’t.

    It depends on the lender.
  • In my experience a refund will not count as a 'payment' (per se), but it will reduce the balance owing and could make a difference to a full-payment direct debit (depending when the refund comes through and depending on your issuer's policy) - but it will not alter the minimum payment amount requested on any statement that you have already received and are waiting to pay.

Given you have not said who the card provider is....

Best and safest advice is to ask your card provider.
