Just remembered my last lot packed the satnav. Needed it to find the estate agents to collect keys then to get to house. My poor sis had to come round with hers for me to borrow! Keep your phone charger handy too.

  • Remember they wont care if what they find is even remotely rubbish. They will pack absolutely everything regardless of your intention to keep it! So if you're planning on having a clear out of your junk do it before they arrive and not while they are there.

I agree with pretty much all of the above if you have a decent removal firm.

In my experience they really are anywhere between sshh and shine. I hope yours is the latter, OP, and wish you luck with your move... And please don't forget those items you need to move who are living... Not naming names but a certain pinkteapot seemed to need to be reminded about a certain furry member of the family not so long along ago. Tsk, tsk.

Seriously, a good removal firm's packing service is, in my experience, exactly as described: It was like watching robots; almost surreal. They did in seconds what would have taken us hours and in minutes what would have taken us days. It really is because they have no emotional connection to what they are packing. Not one thing was broken or even chipped. Worth every penny.

I had a much sadder experience. I'd asked for kitchen/glassware packing and wardrobes. I was told they supplied wardrobe boxes with rails inside - they didn't materialise and clothes were just marked "Clothes" or "Shoes", not even any indication whether they were mine or OH's. Kitchen contents were so vaguely labelled, I still have no idea what is in most of them. We have only unpacked the bare essentials after almost 6 months and I still don't know where my dessert spoons are!

A previous poster described them as locusts, I'd agree with that :rotfl: Best money we ever spent, even if they did pack the rubbish that we piled on our bed (which was meant to be the no pack zone). We had a suitcase and our boxes of personal documents in the car, we let them loose with everything else.

When it came to the new house, we only needed the boxes putting into two rooms - our lounge/diner for stuff that came from downstairs, and our spare bedroom for everything that came from upstairs. We sorted it all from there.

I'd agree with those who said it was what money was invented for.

You won't regret or begrudge a penny of it; it takes such a weight off your mind.

  • Loved the packing service. We packed my sentimental and delicate things, and loved books and DVDs into boxes to speed things along. Other than that they packed everything. And I mean literally everything. We found bins packed complete with the rubbish still inside

I used a full packing service but had an overnight bag with clothes for a couple of days, dog pen for keeping them safe while we unloaded, dog beds & food for them for 24 hours, clean bedding for me, important paperwork & a phone charger in my car.

The last thing out the house was the box with tea, coffee, biscuits and kettle and it was meant to be the first thing in to the new house........except I got stuck behind an accident so my sister had to collect the keys, meet the removal men and rang me everytime a decision was needed about what went where! Not only do they pack quickly they can unload a full truck in under 2 hours!

    7. Shut pets in a room which doesn't have anything in it that needs packing (a bathroom works well) with all their essentials that you need in the car. :o
  • I used a packing service a few years ago and it really was money well spent. My husband and I have agreed that we won't move again without paying for packing. They managed to pack a 2 bed flat up on moving day and get it all unpacked and beds put together again at the other end by about 2pm. It was amazing to watch. Nothing was broken and everything was taken to the right rooms at the new house.

If we had been doing it ourselves we would have had to pack up the van the night before and it would have taken most of the day to get the boxes out of the van. Then we would have been absolutely knackered trying to make the bed. As it was, we made the bed after a leisurely lunch, got the plates and cutlery unpacked and set up the tv in time to have a lovely relaxing evening in our new house. It helped that the old owners left the place spotless!
