Can they keep my landline number?

Two years ago I moved house. I'm still within the Glasgow 0141 area, but in a differnt local exchange area. I was with TalkTalk and they moved my number to the new house. I'm now thinking of changing to a different company but I'm having difficulty keeping my number and I'm being given conflicting reasons..

My main question, which I can't find an answer to, is - is it possible to keep a number, even if it is located in a different local exchange area but still within the wider telephone area (In this case the 0141 area)?

TalkTak have clearly been able to do it, so should I now be able to move the number to a different operator?

    Apparently not?

It's not 'your number' by the way and the only way that you'll keep it by the looks is to stay with Talktalk.
  • Just recently moved from Virginmedia (VM) to NOWTV.
VM claimed it would not be possible to 'port' my existing landline telephone number - as they do not use Openreach's cable. However NOWTV said they could and indeed did. Switch was pretty
So my advise would be shortlist your new telecom providers & ask them to confirm if they can retain your number.
TalkTalk may just be trying to use this issue to delay your switch as I am pretty sure you will end up using the same landline anyway (only VM and Kinsgston own their own lines I believe).

Was the number previously ported to TT then moved by TT across an exchange boundary, or was it always a TT number and they chose to move it within their own network ?
If it was a TT number , and they want to move it across their own network , then that’s up to them , but if you are now looking at other providers , TT could if they wanted , say the number isn’t proper to that exchange so changing provider will require a new number from whatever provider you moved to.

If the number was ( for example) a BT number , ported to TT , then TT moved that number across an exchange boundary, then although it was beneficial for you, strictly speaking TT shouldn’t have done it, and any subsequent change of provider could (and probably would) highlight this ‘error’ to BT , and result in BT getting their number back on the original exchange , and you getting an appropriate number from the exchange you are connected to.
The fact that both exchanges share the STD code for Glasgow (0141) is irrelevant, and should be no different if you moved across the country to an 0131 code, providers should still be looking to maintain the integrity of the linked number scheme, if you want to look at other providers you should really be ready to accept that it may result in losing the number , after all you have kept it for 2 years longer than you should have
  • You could port the number to a Voice over IP provider, then it wouldn't matter where you move to. It won't be your landline number, but with a VoIP phone you'd be able to make/receive calls with that number.

I lost my number of 20 odd years when I moved here

Same exchange code , same supplier but different exchange.

It wasn't possible to retain as its technically an " out of area" exchange line despite all same dialing code

Thank you all for your sound advice. It does look as though I have only four options.
    1) to accept that I have to have a new number and spend hours trying to remember all the vast number of people and organistions which need the new number.
    2) Stick with my existing provider.
    3) Voip.
    4) follow the modern trend and abandon my landline in favour of just using a mobile.

I don't find any of them particulary appealing.
  • My landline number has been in the family longer than I have been alive. I inherited it years ago and It's passed through many telco's since. All at the same exchange though.
  • When I moved from TT to Vodafone this year I initially went via a link on a switching site to get the gift card on offer. During the process the system claimed I would have to have a new number, so I cancelled the switch at that point.
A few days later I opened a private tab in my browser (to eliminate any earlier tracking or cookies) and went through the direct Vodafone website link. This time not only did the system say I could keep my landline number but the monthly charge was £2.01 less. So I went with that quote.
Worth trying again from another browser or device.
