British Gas Smart meter woes

Hiya!

Two weeks ago, I have moved into a new build property supplied by British Gas. Very quickly, I've noticed that the gas smart meter is not showing up on in-home display. Connection problem, I thought, but after calling BG I've been told that my gas meter is operating in a 'dumb' mode and they cannot do anything about it as "they don't have the technology required", refusing to go into any more details.

Now my electricity meter is sending readings correctly so I'm bit confused about what would the issue be. Both meters are the second generation ones SMETS2, Landis + Gyr (G470 for gas and E470 for electricity).

Does anyone know what would be the actual reason of them being unable to connect the Smart meter in the setup above?

    Did you mean reason?

You can take a manual reading, which you should do at least once a month, though as newly moved in, once a week for both meters to have an idea of usage and cost.
  • I do meant reason, autocorrect!

So far I am sending gas readings every week. Looking to move to DD payments but at the moment, based on the few weeks of usage the estimated figure is very wrong, way too low. Still, would be nice for those to be done automatically :)

There have been numerous problems reported with comms. issues with gas "smart" meters. The gas meter depends on an internal connection with the leccy meter which then communicates "back to base".
My s-I-l had meters installed by Scottish Power - the gas meter never supplied readings and SP showed no interest in sorting during the year he stayed with them. He has moved to a new supplier - and is back to manual readings for both utilities.

Thi iss very concerning and not related to hype given by the DCC,these meters are supposed to in interoperable between suppliers and clearly something is badly wrong. If this has any effect on the adoption and enrolement of SMETS1 remains to be seen, its enough when the meter goes dumb but prepayment users are expected to be exported to credit customers' on switching and set up a direct debit exposing them to a risk in some cases'.If they don't carry out an affordability check well.

You make it sound like prepay customers are bad. Not all prepay customers have bad credit - some may have just inherited a prepay meter. I managed to move away from prepay back in Jan 17. Very happy paying cheaper prices and my bills are paid on time.
  • Hi this isint a reply.
But does any one here have a pay as you go smart meter run by British gas.
I feel that it is costing me more than old key meter n all bg say is that the meter is accurate n u must be using more energy.

It beats me why anyone gets taken in by the 'free' offer of a smart meter. Huge waste of all our money, with minimal benefit and (as evidenced in forums) endless complications....

I'd agree with that it might be a backdoor into obtaining a credit meter by having it switched to credit mode on changing supplier and then demands for a direct debit to be set up.Prepayment customers appear to be unable clean switch with the prepayment smart option or possibly another meter after haggling for falling into a debt.

The top story highlights the technical problem's with these meters' often not highlighted until an installation is attempted leaving the installer to walk away.
