Quiet whistle from heating/radiators

Our radiators or cr trek heating makes a quiet whistling when it’s on, difficult to describe the sound. At first we thought it was next doors smoke alarm or an old fashioned whistling kettle, and the noise stops as soon as we turn the heating off

Any ideas please guys?

  • It could well be the pump causing the noise.

I had to get a pump replaced earlier this year and the old one caused exactly the same noise as you describe. I don't know if it was a squeaky bearing but as soon as the pump started running, the noise could be heard.

If you have TRVs its probably those. Try opening or closing them slightly.

I sometimes get that noise. As daveyjp says moving the TRV usually does the trick.

Pump in the combi boiler? We had a new Worcester Bosch Greenstar combi fitted 18 months ago, so hopefully isnt that. Or is there another pump?

We used to have a gravity fed system with tanks in the loft with a 3 way pump/valve next to the copper cylinder in the airing cupboard that clogged up and needed replacing before we had the combi fitted

The lounge (where we hear the whistling) was fully open on the TRV (set at 5), so ive wound it down to 3 and see if it stops... fingers crossed :)

I've had whistling TRVs, when it's whistling just turn it slightly & the sound goes away. Until it comes back! I've replaced all the cheap City Plumbing ones now & all is quiet.
