Scottish Power fixed rates

Hi, I've been looking at switching my electricity, but my account is currently in debit, so I assume I would need to pay that off as a one-off payment before switching, which I can't afford to do before Christmas? I assume this debt wouldn't transfer over to the new provider?

I've entered an up-to-date meter reading online today and Scottish Power are happy to keep my monthly direct debits unchanged at £60 per month.

Their website offered me the chance to fix at either £49.86 per month for a year or £51.86 a month for two years. When I attempted to see what this would mean, the website this would equate to payments of £62 or £64 per month respectively, taking into account my current balance. Which is more than I'm paying at the moment?

Should I therefore hold off switching until my account is back in credit?

Thanks for any advice!

Forget the direct debit amounts (which may include payments of arrears), just compare the annual costs based on annual kWh usage from accurate meter readings, not estimates. If it's cheaper (watch out for exit fees) then switch now if you're allowed to.
