PIN reminders

I forgot my PIN for my Sainsburys credit card and online it tells you how to request a new one by logging into the website but the option to do so isnt where it says it is! So I had to phone up and its going to take 3 working days to for me to get the reminder in the post!

Surely they can do it quicker than that in 2019???

Some will allow access online or text a PIN.

But both have been subject to fraudsters accessing accounts. Bank staff do not have access to your PIN. It is all system based.

3 days in the post is very good at this time of year.

    I'd prefer a text tbh.

Unfortunately Sainsburys don't offer this. Some providers such as Virgin allow you to view the PIN online but Sainsburys send the PIN by post.
  • You can get your current pin online or by text.

If you need a new PIN it’s posted to you usually.

When you get it, pop to any machine and change your pin to something you can remember.

For the benefit of the OP you might want to explain exactly how to do either of these because the OP has been unable to view their PIN online and isn't aware of a mechanism to receive a PIN reminder by text:

It should be becuase the bank should not know the pin if you change it, they obviously know the one they sent you and will often display it (which is bad security, but anyway...).

They should not store your pin as much as every website should not store your password. They should store a hash of it. Depending on the hash method collisions are possible (you have more than one pin), but they are much more preferable to storing you pin/password which could be stolen. (yes reverse hash methods exisist, whihc is why they should use up to date methods, whihc may force a change at times).
  • First thing I do when I receive a new card and PIN, is change the PIN to a number that I will remember.

I know that it is frowned upon, but I have the same PIN for ever a dozen cards. If I did not do that, I wouldn't be able to memorise all the different PINs.
