Gas provider wants to fit a smart meter!

I am currently in the process of changing my Gas provider but a clause in their T&Cs has stalled my process. They mention that I will have a smart meter and they will be in touch to fit it! I do not want one and my electricity is paid through my landlord. Can a new Gas provider insist on this?

They can't force you to have a smart meter but sadly it seems that they can offer some tariffs only to those who agree to have a smart meter.
Just go somewhere else, there are many smaller companies who will be happy to help.0 -
Have a look at Zog Energy - They only supply Gas and though not the absolute cheapest, they are long established with good feed back.
A Smart Electric meter has to be already in position for a Smart Gas meter to work, as a Gas only supplier Zog don't have any "Smart Meter only" tariffs0 -

Wow!
I've just done a comparison and they certainly are not the cheapest are they?.
For an average user here in the East Midlands region, there are half a dozen cheaper suppliers offering over a dozen cheaper tariffs.
Zog, on their cheapest offering, are £80 per year more expensive than the cheapest and has no possibility of cashback that some of the cheaper ones do offer.
(I have not included any cashback in the savings)
I haven't checked all the details of all the 12+ cheaper tariffs, but there is certainly one within the top 4 suppliers (that are all within £15 of the cheapest) that does not require smart meters.0 -

... Then it would seem you have found your answer. Many suppliers, especially the big 6, insist on inflicting smart meters for their most competitive tariffs because they have government targets to meet and incur financial penalties if they fail to meet them. It is all about the "money, money, money".0
