Hard drive recorder needed for Philips 50PUS6814 Television

Please can someone recommend a hard drive usb for the above named Philips TV. I have tried two so far which met the specifications, the first was not recognised and the second records fine and pauses TV but on playback the screen flashes black every few seconds.
I just want to buy a hard drive that will work reliably. It needs to be a usb 2.0 minimum capacity 250gb minimum write speed 30mb according to Philips. Is it better to buy one with its own power source? I would like it more for the ability to pause TV rather than for recording and keeping programmes. Grateful for any views.

Does the TV specify that it can provide power to a drive ? I assume many TVs intend that you use a flash drive rather than a hard drive, Using a powered hub would be an alternative to getting a drive with its own power supply.
USB 2 doesn't offer that much power as standard. I have a usb drive (for rpi) which came with a cable with two A connectors (so that it could draw power from two ports) but I've used it from single port on a powered USB 2 hub for several years now with no trouble.
A flash drive would probably be sufficient for just pausing live tv, though flash doesn't like being written continuously. 250Gb sounds high for a minimum capacity - SD freeview is of the order of 2Gb/hour or so.
ETA: an advantage of an external power supply (either powered hub or powered drive) is that you can probably use a longer usb cable. If you want to power it from the TV, you'd probably want a relatively short cable to reduce power attenuation.0 -
Thanks it can provide power. Forgive my ignorance what I have currently is a small hard drive connected to a usb which is then powered by the tv but as detailed in my original post, not working very well. A flash drive would be just the usb on its own wouldnt it?
Philips have definitely said a USB 2 connection as opposed to higher than that.I can offer no resistance, I can offer no respite

There are mainly 3 types of drives:
- 'big' ones, 3.5", which require an external power supply;
- 'regular' ones, 2.5", which may (or may not) work with the power from the USB port alone;
- flash drives that do not require power
Which one do you currently have? If it is the second one, you could use a small, powered USB hub to give the drive sufficient power to stay on, or you could use a USB cable with two ends, one is used for data, and it will connect to the TV, the other is for additional power only, and can be connected to a normal USB charger.0 -
Do you have the latest software update installed?

Okay so a new drive with an external power supply seems to work fine however the one I have used by Sonnics is too noisy when the TV is on stand by, also it has to be manually switched on if the tv is turned off at the wall, it goes to standby. Can anyone recommend a hard drive that runs quietly and ideally turns on when the tv is turned on without having to be manually switched onI can offer no resistance, I can offer no respite

An SSD (from having isntalled them in my own machines) is near silent and prices have tumbled - eg (if you already have a usb caddy) - https://www.mymemory.co.uk/crucial-240gb-bx500-internal-2-5-sata-ssd-drive-540mb-s.html0

Perhaps one of those power strips that automatically turns off peripheral sockets when main unit is turned off ? Not a specific recommendation, but this sort of thing:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Energy-Powerdown-Protection-Remote-EON/dp/B00VKU57D4 (Hmm - not sure that's quite what I had in mind since it sounds like it's listening out for on/off via TV's remote control ? I was thinking of the kind that senses the current drawn on the main socket.)
Slower 5400rpm disks are probably quieter and require less power. If you have a faster one, perhaps it's a fan that's making all the noise ? (I use a USB drive and it's virtually silent. Spins up and down on demand. No fan so probably 5400.)0 -
FWIW, I have Philips 50PUS7303 and it works fine with portable (no power supply) 'WD My Passport Ultra 2TB Classic". I just plugged it in and it worked. IIRC the TV formatted it first.
It's very silent - I can't hear any noise.0 -

Hmm I didn’t think was going to be so difficult, so I tried this one, thought I should go with what Philips day and make sure 250gb minimum: SSD link above
Not recognised by the tv, works fine with caddy and on a laptop. So far I have tried a portable hard drive connected to a usb, that was recognised but playback was unwatchable screen keeps going black every few seconds, tried a hard drive with its own power, worked but too noisy and doesn’t switch on automatically, now the SSD that wasnt recognised. Really not sure what to try now , haven’t found many people with the same TV yet as it’s a new model. The 2 USB ports are USB and USB 2.I can offer no resistance, I can offer no respite
