I had a rescue dog some years ago which, while on a lead, suddenly attacked a man at a bus stop, puncturing his skin and ruining his trousers, He had to go to A&E for a checkup. He was very nice about it and only charged me £30 for the trousers when he could have sued for a lot of money. I too was mortified, and on the vet's advice the dog sadly had to be put down. The vet thought that the dog had probably been badly mistreated by his previous owner.

Oh bless, sorry about the dog. :(

After it has bitten once i fail to see how you can be confident it wont do it again. The potential is there.
It might be a toddlers face next.and your dog would be put down

A harness or lead and a muzzle is now necessary
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Which dog was aggressive first? Did the other dog have good doggy manners? Dogs that approach straight on can be perceived to be aggressive - so was it unprovoked according to human manners or your dog’s perception?

Puppy in tow but been fine for 5 years? I would say it was 100% a dominance / enforcement response.

What dog is it? I suspect your pack structure has changed since the puppy and your older dog is now making sure its still No1. Out on the walk, your dog before the puppy might not have needed to deal with another dog because no pack to "represent" but now its firmly in the "hold my coat" camp.

You both need training to ensure this does not get worse, also time will help as things should settle down after 6-12 months but I would 100% seek professional advice even if its just a couple of hours over the space of a few weeks.
