Also helps if you pick a model of car for which parts are cheaply/readily available, which keeps repair costs down.
Personally I have 2 of the most unusual cars in the country so I didn't take my own advice, but luckily I haven't pranged either of them (touch wood etc).0 -

If its been reported it will get a loading as having 1 bump (even not claimed) means you are far more likely to have another one in insurance terms.

By "reported but not claimed on", you mean that he didn't claim for his damage - but the damage he caused to somebody else's property was claimed for and paid out.
So he's got zero NCD and a recent at-fault claim against him.
