I changed my own oil once or twice in the 80s. I used to swap wheels myself when I had a puncture, but if I had to do it now, I'm no longer sure I could find the jacking point.

I would change a battery, but they are no longer accessible in my current cars. At least the light bulbs are still mostly accessible. I haven;t actually had to change any of the front bulbs on the C-Max, so they might not be accessible.

Some modern cars make changing light bulbs almost impossible for people with limited tech skill,no wonder there is always a car being worked on outside our local Halfords :rotfl:

But it is fun watching some poor young chap removing lumps from his knuckles in the attempt rather than doing it yourself.

Not when they're lumps of your headlights that he's removing...
  • Have done in the past, but tend not to these days.
Biggest job was probably head gaskets on an old range rover. Brakes, ball joints, bushes, consumable mot fail items were done if I had time.
Nowadays I check the overtime at work and the weather, then decide from that.
Been going to the same independent for nearly 30 years now, they've never done me a bad turn and their labour charges (don't know the actual hourly rate) seem good.
  • Ford Prefect, one of the main characters in that excellent book/t.v. series.:)
Nope, he was talking to me about a car his brother had, not about a TV show and what was on it :)
