Smart Meter query

If my current (old style) energy meter ever develops a fault, do I HAVE to have a Smart Meter installed or can I insist that it's replaced with an older non-Smart Meter instead?
I'm just curious as I'm one of many who is getting increasingly hassled by my energy provider to have a Smart Meter installed and it wouldn't surprise me if, one day, my energy provider tried to trick me into getting a Smart Meter by saying that my old style unit is faulty (there's also of course a chance that it may one day develop an actual fault).
I'm with SSE.

At the moment they can't insist you have a smart meter.
However, that only applies to the standard tariff. They can offer cheaper tariffs with having a smart meter as a condition.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

Thanks, but what if my current non-Smart Meter developed a fault? Could I insist that it's replaced with a similar type that is not a Smart Meter?0 -

Not really, they might replace it with a smart meter configured to work in the dumb mode.
I'm guessing that they wont be buying or storing a batch of clockwork meters for those who insist on a specific meter type. In the end its their meter and they can insist that you have what they've got.
Even though the law says you dont have to have one, the energy company could, in theory, start refusing to supply customers or charging them exhorbitant rates for not having one.
If its your choice not to have one, then its their choice not to supply you or charge extraNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

Well if they were coming to fit a new meter anyway then what logical reason would there be not to have a smart meter fitted ?0
