Old type basic phone with cheapest tariff.

  • Why do you need a mobile for a child? People in the know say that children should not be subjected to mobile phone radiation because of their skulls.

Why can you not do a similar thing with a home phone? You could ring your landline from a mobile and speak to the child on the home phone. I do not understand what difference the call cost makes if the phone will not be used to make any calls.

Maybe a cheap walkie talkie type thing which would probably cost £10 to £20.

The already mentioned Three with their 3-2-1 tariff is the best for a low user, but requires a 3G capable phone, and most of the basic type phones are only 2G.

There is the Nokia 3310 that is a 'retro-style' for £49 that could be used with the Three sim: https://www.argos.co.uk/product/7908930

Alternative networks with cheap prices that can be used with a basic 2G phone:

    1pMobile (1p/minute, 1p/text and 1p/MB) - but a minimum top-up of £10 every 120 days (4 months). Uses EE network.

Asda mobile (8p/minute, 4p/text and 5p/MB). Uses EE network.
Can also get same prices with the Tesco PAYG Lite (on 02 network) but think you have to sign up with standard PAYG then phone to get the Lite package.

Giffgaff (15p/minute, 5p/text) but now you're heading towards bundles being better value.
Coop mobile is on EE/T-Mobile network and calls 8p/min Texts 4p each and to another Coop mobile its 4p and 2p respectively.

Buy a Nokia 1100 from ebay for £10 and you're online for £20 all in.

I spend maybe £20/year on my phone - as does my partner

Carphonewarehouse phones are all unlocked and a "Burner" phone is free but you have to buy £10 credit which you can use then put a sim of your choice in the phone.
You can get free sims from all the networks by going on their web sites
    Hope this helps

I have an Asda sim, it was free from https://mobile.asda.com/ and will receive incoming calls for 120 days. Just get a new one when it runs out. Handy for when you 'need' to put a mobile number in but don't want to use your own number. It uses EE so good signal in most areas. I'm guessing it could be used for 999 calls in emergency too.
