Warm Home Discount

Hello. I'm currently with EDF for my energy supply. I missed out on the big-switch as I was in hospital. I'm now looking to switch. I was granted the Warm Home Discount by EDF. On the comparison site EON and British Gas are cheaper by around £200.00. My benefit is ESA. Doe's anybody know if I am still able to apply to these suppliers or is it too late?

Thanks to anyone who replies.

  • the criterua for the broader group has changed this year with many companies , for example bulb ESA + an additional type , ie carer or disability benefit etc

I posted this on another thread

"I recieve ESA and have been elegable for WHD for any yrs , this yr bulb have added

In addition, one of the following must also apply:

you’re responsible for a child aged 16 or younger who normally lives with you
    you’re aged 65 or older
you get a disabled child premium
you get a disability premium, enhanced disability premium or severe disability premium (this includes Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment and Attendance Allowance)
you get a pensioner premium, higher pensioner premium or enhanced pensioner premium
you get the 'limited capability for work' or 'limited capability for work and work-related activity' element of Universal Credit
you get the disabled child element of Universal Credit
you get the disability or severe disability element of Child Tax Credit
you get the Carer's Premium or Carer's Allowance for someone in your home
you get the disability or severe disability element of Working Tax Credit

ensure to meet British gas criteria , and that the scheme us still open , limited pot and been open for a while

I can confirm that applications for the WHD (as part of the broader group) are now open with both Eon and British Gas. :)
  • british gas have added to there criteria this yr

The "Broader group" applies to existing British Gas electricity customers. You must continue to be in supply of your electricity with British Gas when the payments are made in winter 2019/2020. Payments will be made between 1st January and 31st March 2020.

To qualify you must be the account holder or partner of the account holder and are required to meet one of the following criteria:

    1. In receipt of the State Pension Credit (unless already qualifying as part of Core Group)

    2. In receipt of one of the following means tested eligible benefits:

    Income Support
    Income based Jobseekers’ Allowance
Income related Employment and Support Allowance (which includes a work related activity or support component)
    Universal Credit (low income elements)
AND the benefit must include one of the following[1]:

Child element for children aged 5 or under
    Disabled child element
    3. Have a gross annual household income (HHI) of less than £16,190[2] AND at least one of the following applies:

The account holder is living with mental or physical disability or illness
The account holder is of pensionable age
There is a child living in the house aged 5 or under
You spend 10% or more of household income on energy bills to heat your property

if your only benefit is ESA , you will not get it

  • Thanks for all the replies. I receive ESA. I have mental health issues. My medication at the moment is Mirtazapine 1x45mg, Temazepam 1x20mg and 1x2mg Diazepam. I'm also being helped by the Crisis Resolution Team. Am I mental enough for WHD? My income is just ESA and nowhere near £16,190. It's just me living here with my dog.

    Thanks again.

Make sure that the new supplier really would be cheaper. Ofgem's crazy rules mean that the supposedly cheaper tariff could cost you more if you're on a fixed tariff !

Forget any claimed savings, just compare the annual cost of your current deal with the annual cost of the new one.
  • I've just checked my account on-line. I am now on Safeguard Assist Capped Tariff. My account is £399.00 credit and my direct debit is £56.00 per month, and as I said before my application for WHD with EDF has been approved. I don't know whether to stay or move.

If you're on a capped tariff that suggests you're paying far too much ! At the very least you should investigate switching to a different EDF tariff (but check that you'd keep WHD and not have exit fees).

There's also not much point in being in credit by £399 (seven months' worth). OK, EDF aren't likely to go bust and savings rates aren't great, but every little helps.

Hello forexbert and we're still taking applications for the Broader Group of Warm Home Discount.

There's only a certain number of Broader Group applications we can accept and we'll close the scheme to new applicants once we reach this number. Last time (2018/19) we closed the scheme in mid-March 19. In previous years it closed earlier in November or December. I don't have a closing date for 2019/20 yet.

It's best to take this into consideration before switching to us. If you do decide to join us, we'll send a Welcome Pack with an account number within 5 working days of you accepting a quote. Please use this account number to apply as soon as possible.

The application from on our website is the quickest way. There's also more information about the scheme, including details of eligibility.

Hope this is of interest forexbert and you're feeling better after your stay in hospital.
