On secondment, previous role been made redundent

Options
Hello,

This is my first post and looking for some advice please i'd be ever so grateful!

My partner is currently on a secondment role which was due to end in October 2019, however this was extended until March 2020 but no new paperwork was signed on his behalf for this extension.

His old role if the secondment ends has been made redundant. He has now been offered a new role in a new business, due to start January 2020. What he wants to know, and what his current boss is being very vague about is, can he just say he wants to accept his redundancy now and take the payout? Even though his secondment role is still going?

Many thanks in advance! :)

If a suitable alternative role is offered, then there is no redundancy. He either accepts the role or resigns.
