Refund made in error

I bought an item worth around a thousand pound earlier this year.

The company sent me 4 instead of 1.

The called me back to get the extra 3 items back, which we sorted out.

Now a few months on they have called me again to say that they refunded me in error for the amount I paid and want me to pay it back.

What should I do? Do I need to pay it back quickly?

  • Aa quickly as you can, would be appropriate.

You would probably expect the same if the situation was reversed.
  • If you are so affluent that a refund of £1000 went unnoticed into your bank account, then I imagine you can pay it back extremely quickly!

So you received £3000 worth of goods that were sent by mistake and they called you to get them back.
Why didn't you contact them as soon as you realised what had happened?

Then they refunded you £1000 by mistake a few months ago, and again, you waited for them to contact you to request their money back.

If I was in the accounts department of that company, I would now be trying my hardest to get the money as soon as possible just in case you forget about it again.
  • It appears that this is just one in a string of mistakes they made. On that basis, I would agree a programme of repayments with them that suits you.
  • If you think they're mistaken and you don't owe them anything, ask them for an explanation so you can check.

If you know you received money in error, pay them back as quickly as possible.

    It's really very straightforward.

I did not ‘wait’ for them to contact me, I did not notice the refund.

You must be flush. I'd certainly notice an extra £1000 in my account

If you've got that much money then what's the problem with refunding them now?
  • I asked the company if we could arrange scheduled repayments and they agreed so a good resolution!
  • So it’s still sitting there in your rainy day fund if you hardly look at that account... Why make a huge fuss about scheduling repayments for a few pence interest over the year if you keep it in the rainy day fund...

You’re the only one not helping yourself!
