Occasional Student Car Insurance

I pay a lot for car insurance to cover my student daughter but she only drives when she is home from university maximum about 4 weeks a year. Is there a company which you can pay for short term cover rather than paying for the whole year? Any tips?

If she has her own car then it sounds more prudent to get rid and just hire a car for the 4 weeks.

Aviva plus might work - it claims to offer cover by the month.

I've not read the detailed Ts&Cs though.

Sorry. We don't have personal cars more 'pool' cars. We have a small car that we use and she is insured to drive. Even when she is not at University she is on holiday somewhere, so it's insured all year but she's not often at home.

Just tried that. A month with Aviva costs more than the renewal quote for the whole year.
  • Direct line car insurance Let’s you just pay by the day with no admin charge - works out very cost effective.
Unfortunately I am now with admiral who charge £15 for putting extra drivers on for a short time.

Just google Monthly car insurance. Plenty of companies do it.

I used to do it when my daughter wanted to use my car. We used Marmalade.
    It then means.
A They can pay it themselves.
B No risk to your no claims.

I would expect a student to be under 25. Many hire companies will not hire to under 25's. Just how much would you expect to pay to hire a car for a month?
As well as working in a disputes team...
I see far to many involving car hire and damage/fines...

    Try Cuvva or Veygo.

Thanks for the replies. I've actually got 2 daughters at university both under 22. The extra for the year for both of them is just under £400 which isn't too bad. They both passed when they were 17 although we forced them to take lessons and they weren't really keen. It does seem possible to insure them by the hour, day, week etc but I can't imagine we would do it. We would just drive them as it would be cheaper. I wanted to keep them driving until they got their own car but now I am not sure they will. They seem to look on owning a car as a bit old fashioned. Far easier and cheaper just to get an Uber. Decisions. Decisions.
