Electric fire tripping electrics - could it be damp? Updated...

  • Better still get it checked, any fault fixed and then you can use it again (if it can be!) but use a registered electrician being a member of an electrical trade body?
It really is best not to leave in situe an appliance known to be problematic!!

Thank you, we are waiting for our trusty electrician to get back to us. I have a feeling he won't be able to find anything wrong as it's so intermittent, but worth a try! It's all unplugged at the moment so should be safe for the time being :)
  • Ok so the electrician has been... and is stumped :(
He PAT tested the fire and a couple of other things and found no faults. He then tested the socket and said there does seem to be a small amount of connection when there should be none, indicating a fault. But the mystery is why it isn't tripping the RCD (which is working fine). The safety sticker on the fuse box says to retest in 5 years (which has just passed), and apparently it's usually 10 unless something is picked up. So perhaps there has been a longstanding fault since we bought the house (5 years ago). Going to get the full test done in the new year, and try not to lose too much sleep over thoughts of damp and replastering....
