Only carrots and small potatoes in my local Lidl last night. Will now have to make an extra journey to get my Christmas veg which will negate any savings unless I fill my fridge with them and hope they last for a month.

I went into Lidl this morning and they had palettes of the 15p veg stacked taller than me. All veg on offer in stock. Probably pays to get there early!

That's a shame. I suppose it depends when they get deliveries.

They had everything in stock in my Aldi today. As well as all my Christmas veg I bought a large swede which I'll cook and freeze as it's not popular with our Christmas visitors but DH and I like it.

In general I find Aldi have more stock than Lidls, expecially the offers. The carrots looked like they were class 2. I guess some horses will go hungry this year.

Veg keeps fresh in the fridge for a few weeks nicely, so this is a good time to stock up. Bear in mind also, you can easily make great soups with leftover veg; just soften a sliced onion in a large pan, with 2 cloves of sliced garlic, then add a couple of bay leaves and 1.5 litres of chicken or veg stock (3 cubes), season; and add your veg (about 1.5 kg); simmer for about 30 minutes with lid on. Leave to cool then liquidize. Lovely tasty, healthy soup; great with some bread.

That's one recipe for soup. My favourite is to use the stock from cooking the gammon joint. Add some lentils, onions and carrots. Delicious lentil soup. :)

Was trying to reduce the amount of side dishes I do with Christmas dinner so had discounted swede, but eldest DD said last night how much she loves my swede mash, so swede is back on my veg list lol. I do the singing swede thing for easy quick mash, then in with butter and some pepper nom nom. As the swedes are cheap will get a few, the mash freezes brilliantly.

Or split peas and some bits of the gammon to make pea and ham soup, so filling and waming on a cold day :j

Knorr do a fantastic ham stock cube.

Husband uses them with the gammon joint water, lentils and potatoes.

I make carrot and swede mash, leftovers get frozen in takeaway tubs, they often find the way into soup.

We could start a reduced veg recipe thread. ;)
