Cancelled car insurance

Hastings were the best price when doing comparisons. But and there is a big BUT . . . Hastings requested me to send in copies of mine and the named driver licenses, the email was sent on 28/11/19 giving me a deadline to send the details by 05/12/19. However I’m not very good with post and my phone is being fixed so I hadn’t checked my emails. I have my brothers old phone now as he has just upgraded so decided to check my emails. And find that the policy is cancelled, OK, I’ve been driving round without insurance for 4 days prior to opening this email. Have been Insured for over a month thinking everything is ok! And not expecting having to send anything off. I’ve only been driving a month so not clued up to the insurance world, I’m naive.

So having nothing to hide I phoned them up, and asked If i can send in the documents today. Now again having nothing to hide. Hastings have refused my request to send the documents and cancelled my policy! resulting in my new car insurance quotes, going up, over a thousand pounds! as I now have to declare that I’ve had a policy cancelled! All at Christmas!.

I have made a complaint. Giving the service I have received so far I’m not optimistic. Surely it can be ok for me to send the documents off? I get they weren’t sent off by the deadline, however if they were I would still be insured as there is nothing different to what is already on my policy.

Now believe I will have to suffer financially for the next few years due to a miscommunication which feels like it could be resolved much much easier.

Feel like it may be an issue for the financial ombudsman, but I don’t want to do that as I already feel physically sick over the whole experience.

Feeling at a loss and a bit hopeless, any advice would be welcome.

Probably should have Paid that little extra to get a better service. Who knows.

When there has been an admin error earlier in the policy buying process, which causes cancellation, you don't need to declare these.

Yes it asks you to disclose all cancellations, i.e have you ever had a policy cancelled, but what they really mean by this, is that have you had a policy cancelled due to non disclosure, attempted fraud or something else which makes you a poor risk. This is where you have had a letter from an Insurers saying they have cancelled and advised it needs to be disclosed when arranging future Insurance.

If people had to disclose every cancellation during their lifetime, then it would be most people. At some point most people have had a policy cancelled due to admin error or they have cancelled it mid term due to new risk not being covered by an Insurers.

Your cancellation due to an admin error will not be recorded on any Insurance database and will not cause you a problem. Simply arrange new insurance without mentioning this and move on. Otherwise you will be getting into totally unecessary expensive niche Insurance for years to come.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Depending on the outcome of the complaint go to the ombudsman
Others will disagree but anyone who believes that emails are a 100% reliable method of communication does not understand how emails work.
I do not believe emails are subject to the interpretation act and so Hastings cannot prove you received them
