Insurer asking for PAYE

Hi

We took out employers liability insurance recently and the insurer is asking for our PAYE number. The reason is somewhat vague (If an employee makes a claim against you, it's important to prove that you're insured.)

Has anyone come across this before and whether it is safe to provide them with our PAYE number. Is it a legal requirement? Thanks.

It's so the insurer can add your details to the Employers Liability database so that the insurer can be traced in years to come when a claim is made against an employers liability insurance.

I.e. if an employee is diagnosed with an injury or medical condition in, say, 10, 20, 30 years' time, the database can be used to find who the employer had employer liability insurance with at the time so a claim can be made. Otherwise, it's difficult, if not impossible, to find out which insurance firm is liable. I think this all came about from the asbestos claims which didn't manifest until many years later.

For reference you need to keep details of who you employed and for how long along with EL insurers details for 40 years!!
