    Nope, the L simply enables an employer to increase the code by a set amount each year.

    For example in 2018:19 the emergency tax code was 1185L and employers added 65 to get to the emergency tax code for 2019:20 of 1250L.

    700L in 2018:19 would become 765L in 2019:20 etc.

    If the standard increase doesn't apply for some reason HMRC have to send a new tax code to the employer.
  • No, they haven’t, I have had that £160 deducted in September, October and November’s pay.
  • If the 1250L tax code was issued too late for the November payslip then it should be used by your employer on your December pay and you will get a refund of any tax overpaid (quite possibly all £480 deducted so far) in your wage.
