When do we need to update our address?

Hi

Not sure I'm posting this in the correct place.

We have recently brought our first property but we are not moving in yet as the property needs some work.

I have already set up gas, electricity and water to the new address but I am wondering, when should I contact banks, mobile phone bills, etc to change our address. Do I need to do that now even though we are not yet living there or do I need to wait until we acutally move into the property?

I contacted British Gas today to see if we could change the prepayment meter for the gas to a credit meter but they said I failed their credit check. I wondered if this was because our credit files still list our previous address as we have not updated things yet. British Gas said they couldn't say why we had failed only that we could try again in 60 days.

Thanks

I'd leave it until you actually move in. You're not currently living there. You presumably also have utility accounts wherever you're living at the moment.

Do look out for your bank - we recently bought a house and moved in two weeks later. We then went online to change our address with the bank and they'd already updated our address at completion as we had a mortgage with them!

Whatever you decide, be consistent. Do electoral roll, banks, credit cards, mobile phones, etc., all around the same time.
  • Theres no reason why you can't do it now as long as you're round there at least a few times a week to pick up post. Its one more job to tick off the list and be done with. Plus anything you forget to update will still come to your current address so you can action any stragglers before you move out.

    Thats what i'd do anyway.

unless the place is a mess with contractors going in and out in your absence. Then I'd keep important post at the address where you actually live.

If you can pick up post regularly, I'd do it now. The sooner you do it, the more time you have to see who you forgot to notify by virtue of continuing to receive mail at your current address.

Let your water supplier at your new property know that you're not actually living there and they may suspend the standing charge until when you do move in. This happened with us when we had two properties. Informed them when we moved into the new one and the billing started from there.

Don't forget to update DVLA for both your V5C and your driving licence. (Separate notifications - they're not the exact same addresses).
  • I was in the same situation, I kept banks/driving license etc at my parents house because thats where I was sleeping, stuff in relation to that house (utilities etc) were sent to the new house and depending on my shifts I went either before or after work and picked up the post

I posted a list on another thread of people you may need to inform - don't want to clutter up this one.
