Smets 2 problem

Quite recently Shell Energy installed a Smets 2 Meter and for a time the energy display monitor worked correctly. However about a month ago it stopped receiving electricity info from the meter. After contacting Shell Energy a couple of times they tell me there is a problem with the Smets 2 meters and that it is a nationwide issue. Am I being fobbed off , or could it just be a faulty monitor ? The readings on the meter itself seem OK.

One of the few supposed benefits of having a smart meter is the IHD. If that doesn't work, the thing becomes rather pointless from the customer's point-of-view.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Correct billing from the meter to the suppliers is more important from both supplier and customers points of view
IHD is nothing more than an irrelevance, like a free gift in a packet of Cornflakes
.. Once the lesson has been taught to customers on why some appliances make the IHD go into the red , on the green, amber , red scale , then what is the point of having it plugged in for years , wasting power ?
What is more important is that Capita get the DCC working. with smart switching working

Are Shell Energy still getting accurate readings from the meter itself? There are communication issues in the N of England with SMETS2 meters connecting with the DCC

No it doesn't. The whole idea of smart metering is to get accurate billing. The IHD is just a toy

Come on ! We have always known that the Smartie Meters programme was the ultimate exercise in plonker pulling
  • Have the same problem but with my gas. It used to work fine then just stopped so I contacted my energy company at the time who said it was a known issue and they would get me a new one. They didn't. They did confirm that they weren't getting my gas meter readings automatically sent to them so I just kept giving them manually online every month. I've changed companies and do the same and have again requested a new one.

Chameleon state that the problem is with the network, but they have produced a work around, yet to be rolled out via the DCC.

You could try following these steps to connect your IHD to your home WiFi to enable it to receive firmware updates rather than wait for an over the air update via the DCC.

It is recommended to keep your IHD connected to Wi-Fi, to ensure that the firmware is updated automatically, which will keep your IHD working while the smart meter network is being set up across the UK.

There are different models of IHD. The quickest way to tell which one you have is by the colour of the case. It'll either be black for an IHD3 or white for an IHD6.

    How to connect your IHD:

    Connecting your black IHD3

Some early models of black IHD3 aren't able to connect to Wi-Fi.

If your IHD3 is able to connect to Wi-Fi, it will show the following icons at the top of the screen:

    a group of curved bars
    a group of straight bars

These could be together, as shown in the example below, or either side of the screen. These represent the strength of your Wi-Fi signal and the strength of the signal between your IHD and your smart meter.

If your IHD3 is able to connect, these are the steps you need to take:

    1) Navigate through the controls to join the network

Press Menu/OK to bring up the menu
Press the forward Arrow until you see Settings [OK]
    Press Menu/OK to select Settings
Press the forward Arrow until you see Switch on Wi-Fi and press Menu/OK
Press the forward Arrow until you see Join Network and press Menu/OK

    2) Choose how you would like to connect to Wi-Fi

There are 3 different methods. Press the forward Arrow to make your choice and Menu/OK to select it. When asked, use the arrows to enter the password for your Wi-Fi network:

Use the forward and back arrows to select upper case, lower case, numbers or symbols
    Press Menu/OK after every character
Press Save to save the password when you’re done

    These are the options available:

Scan for networks - this will scan for Wi-Fi networks available in your home, when you've made your selection, enter your password
WPS Push Button - select this, then push the WPS button on the back of your router, once it's connected press OK on your IHD to complete the connection
WPS PIN Entry - this will generate a code, login to your router’s admin page via your computer and enter the code to complete the connection

To disable the Wi-Fi connection for your black IHD3

    Press Menu/OK
Press the right Arrow to scroll through to Settings [OK]
    Press Menu/OK
Use the right Arrow to scroll to Switch off Wi-Fi? and press Menu/OK.

    Connecting your white IHD6

All IHD6s are able to connect to Wi-Fi. Here's how:

    1) Navigate through the controls to Wi-Fi options

Press the Menu icon in the bottom right corner
Press the right arrow until you see Settings
    Press Settings and then Wi-Fi
Press the white button shape to activate the connection

    2) Choose how you would like to connect to Wi-Fi

There are 4 different methods. Press:

Scan to scan for Wi-Fi networks available in your home - when you’ve found the
name of the one you want, press it and enter your Wi-Fi password in the screen
    that follows
WPS PIN to generate a code to enter into the access point on your router
WPS Push to get the IHD ready, and then push the WPS button on the back of your router, once it's connected press OK on your IHD
Network Name to enter the name of your Wi-Fi network straight into the IHD – you’ll
be asked to enter your password next

When the connection is made, Connected will appear in the centre of the IHD and you’ll see the strength of the signal in the top right hand corner.

To disable the Wi-Fi connection for your white IHD6

Press the Menu icon in the bottom right corner
Press the right arrow until you see Settings
Press the Wi-Fi button, and you’ll see the option to Leave network as a red button at the bottom of the screen.

Now check that you’re on the latest version of the firmware:

    Black IHD3:

    Press OK

Press the right Arrow until you see IHD Information and press OK

Press the right Arrow twice until you see the Zigbee Version

Once your IHD is upgraded, it will read Zigbee Version 2.5.0

    White IHD6

Press the Menu button in the bottom right corner

    Select IHD Info

Once your IHD is upgraded, it will read IHD6 – CAD – PPMID 1.4 CAD 1.9
