Does anybody know of any providers who will insure a car against theft/damage only if it is being stored in a locked garage and won’t be driven? Not having much luck on google.

It would only need to be for just over a month or so too which seems to make it harder!

Thanks.

  • A normal TPFT policy.

What happens after a month or so? Will it be sold, used?

    It will start being used.

I’m thinking it’s probably not worth faffing about then as the difference between TPFT and FC is pretty negligible.

    Thanks
  • TPFT/ TPO used to be cheap, now FC is the cheapest.

As you will be using it, just do a normal FC policy, as you say, saves the faffing :)

  • Yep, think you’re probably right, plus I won’t have to worry about the battery in cold weather.

    Thanks!

There are a number of providers who will give you a policy precisely for this type of situation, which covers fire, theft etc, but not anything to do with road accidents. As it has no third party element it doesn't count as car insurance for the purposes or the Road Traffic Act so the car has to be kept off-road and SORNed. Google "SORN insurance", "laid up insurance" or "Fire and theft only insurance".

It is considerably cheaper than either comprehensive or TPFT insurance - but once you factor in things like the cancellation fee on your current policy I'm not sure whether it will work out cheaper if you're only using it for a month or so. It would definitely be the option to go for if you were planning on keeping the car in storage long term.

How does the type of insurance affect the battery? ??

Being able to drive it or not affects the battery. :;)

Unlikely to be worth it for a month but not difficult to find.

Thanks, I had a look with the terms you suggested and did find a few, however i’ve decided to just go with fully comp as it’s not really worth it for such a short period of time.
