Update - thank you all very much for sharing your knowledge and making such useful suggestions. I have managed the system as suggested for three days now and have dramatically reduced my energy usage while still being comfortable while at home.

Glad to hear that you're saving money and still warm. Remember to keep sending meter readings and to get an idea of your likely new annual consumption: you may find that another company will be more cost effective.
