Opal ring.

I have a really pretty opal ring, oval with 3 diamonds in a cluster on each Shoulder.
9ct gold.bought from an antique dealer very well thought of and legit.

I have a valuation on paper from a different independant well established local jeweller for
£390. All good.
Went to Leeds today and out of criosity went into Cash Converters to ask how much they would buy it for. He took it away, showd it to a fella behind a counter, came back and said . Its not opal, its opaline so worthless and only worth the scrap ie generous at thirty quid. Yes but what about the 6 diamonds. He hummed abd haaad, completely ignored me.
I informed him of my valuation and he couldnt get me out of the shop fast enough.
Was he playing a fast one, yes, i think so,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Is this Cash Coverters the long established high street jewelers by appointment to the Crown? What did you expect!

Cash Converters. What did you expect? It's highly unlikely they're qualified to make any sort of specialist judgement. Why would you bother taking it there for a valuation when you already have a proper, qualified valuation from an actual jeweller?

I too find it very odd to go into a place like Cash Converters 'out of curiosity' for a valuation.

Is there a consumer rights question...?

    I was a. Curious
I was thinking about selling it, it wasnt for a valuation as such.
I was in Leeds for the day, window shopping

I really didnt expect to be lied to, blatantly.

    Thats it then....
    Thanks all

To be fair if you wanted to know how far out places like cash converters are with their valuations, whether out of general curiosity or a possible need to use them in the near future, the obvious way to find out is to get their valuation on something you already know the value of. The usual electronics would be harder for them to fob you off with the incorrect value because of their popularity but something like an unusual ring is the perfect "test".

    But Cash Converters...?

You would have been better off popping into an independent jewellers.
Or offering it back to the original independent local jeweller.

Yet this is exactly what they told the OP that they had done by stating the opal was in fact, glass.
If they were not qualified to make a judgement then this is what they should have said to the OP.

They weren't being asked to provide the service of a professional valuation, they were being asked what they'd pay for it. Anything else they said is just their excuse to back up the offered price.

To be fair here an expert valuation is for insurance purposes and is often on the very high side as it's for replacement of new for old.

Not disrespecting the ring but a value of £390 is pretty low and reflects the fact there is an opal and 6 diamonds which must all be low quality. It's worth to cash converter would be at best £40-£50.

For sale purposes any jeweller will be on the low side so it needs to find it's true value at auction.
People are always disappointed when a place like cash converters offer them a price for their goods.

One if the little secrets of the diamond industry is that they aren't particularly rare. That's especially true of small diamonds.

Diamonds around 1 karat or more are of some interest. Anything below that is more or less worthless. And having several almost worthless diamonds together doesn't make them valuable.

The scrap value of jewelry is usually based on the value of the metal, not the stones in it.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
