TFL at it yet again

Not sure why anyone still uses an Oyster Card for pay as you go, when you can enjoy the same fares (and capping) with most credit cards. I use an Amex card when traveling on TFL. Not only do I earn Avios, but currently I'm also getting 10% cashback.
.
Some people might like to put oyster credit on for a poor relative or a visitor
Some businesses might like to top up their staff's oystercards
You will still get avios for topping up a PAYG on Amex0 -
.... another well known ultra cheap place to be is as everyone knows is Tokyo, Japan.
A point to point commuter TravelCard for 10.8 miles each way costs £215 for 6 months.
To buy the equivalent from TFL would require individual tickets or just over £1100 for 6 months or an unwanted TravelCard at £230 per month for a total of £1380.
And people wonder why I hate TFL and why I’m completely unable to understand my people bend over and allow them to get away with it.0 -
The funding is different. In many places including Tokyo, the metro is funded by government. In London the underground is mostly funded by fares. TfL is in financial difficulty hence the recent and continuing cutting of staff. It will get worse first and then someone will have the bright idea of giving them a government subsidy and round we'll go again.1

It’s my understanding that the Tokyo metro doesn’t get any Govt. subsidy. If you can point me to something that contradicts that please feel free.
Until 18 months ago TFL was getting around £1000,000,000 of govt subsidy a year. Oddly TFL at the time was still running the most expensive public transport system in the world by a country mile.
Because of the political dogma around the Conservatives they don’t use the word subsidy. TFL prefer to say “We receive no direct government funding” The word “DIRECT” is hugely important.0 -

t.
I have seen suggestions that the daily ridership of Tokyo Metro is getting towards double that of London Underground.
I understand the Tokyo companies make a profit0 -
I'd like to point out that TfL do not get any government subsidy. The following link will give you some idea of how they are funded. I know when I worked for London Underground, we were given funds by the government but these funds had to be repaid at years end.

If you absolutely must use contactless I very strongly suggest you use AndroidPay or similar which gives gate receipts. As I said "incomplete" journeys are hugely profitable for TFL.
I've travelled all over the world using the public transport systems of just about every world city on the planet and hand on heart London is by far the most confusing, broken and extortionately expensive I've had the displeasure of using.
Many public transport rail networks around the world are validate on entry only.
London will be visited by a huge number of ourt of towners /foreigners to whom this is the method is the norm where they come from are totally familiar with
If they come to London and exit most places on DLR or unbarriered National rail stations or where the tube barriers are open as they quite often are now I can imagine that they may very well forget to touch out.
( I got caught on the reverse in San Francisco Muni where I spent some time trying to to find a gate with an exit validator but they do not exist )
I do also believe that if there was the systematic problem with touchouts not registering we would be hearing about it far more than is the case as I am people such as your self would not keep quiet about it.
Can I ask how may times this has happened to you or people you know?
You could I suppose do a FOI to TFL to see how many people who have got a gate receipt with Android have failed touch outs0 -
From another thread two days ago:Mr_Singleton wrote: »...I can only assume you don't talk to many people as looking at current TFL supplied figures which represents 100% of ALL journeys shows they are currently making just under £1,300,000 PER WEEK from supposed 'incomplete' journeys. I'll say it again.... £1,300,000 A WEEK!

Should have gone to specsavers..... look at how many noughts I've used. Here's a hint: you'll need more than 1 hand but don't worry you won't need to take your shoes and socks off. Now go and ask a grown up the difference between 3 noughts and 6.0
