Hire cars breakdown cover

Hi, over the years I have taken MSE advice re excess insurance whilst hiring cars in Spain (even though we still get the “hard sell” treatment when picking up the hire cars!!

On a similar note - we are always informed that, unless we take out their cover, we do not have breakdown cover.
My personal European breakdown cover doesn’t cover hire cars - do you have any tips/advice to secure this cover without being fleeced by hire companies??

What is covered under my Car Hire Excess Insurance?
You are covered for up to £7,500 in total, and for anyone claim (excluding CDW and SLI) for any excess or repair costs you have to pay under the terms of your car hire rental agreement if your rental vehicle is involved in an incident whilst being used for business or pleasure and it results in:

Damage to the rental vehicle including damage to the windows, tyres and wheels, headlights, the undercarriage and the roof.
Loss of use of the rental vehicle including theft.
Towing costs relating to damage or mechanical breakdown.

Don't just buy the cheapest that you can find.

Usually breakdowns are the responsibility of the car rental company, unless they deem the breakdown is your fault. Leaving lights on, mis-fuelling etc
