Energy Supplier used wrong meter

I wonder if anyone can help?

British Gas have been using estimates and readings from the wrong gas meter, ie not the gas meter installed at the property (I own the flat, my daughter lives there, and my name is also on the gas account), and I am now dealing with British Gas complaints department. I became involved when BG sent a gas statement saying they owed my daughter £1400 which soon became £905. The more I looked into the matter the more incredulous I have become--the figures just do not add up!

Initially BG said that they had fitted a new gas meter in 2016 which they have now admitted was a lie. They are now saying that a new gas meter was installed in 2001 which is again untrue. I have checked and the correct meter serial number is registered against the MPRN but I have been unable to find the date when the meter was fitted (I have checked with Cadent but they couldn't help me).

We believe that the gas meter was installed when the semi-detatched house was converted into two flats in 1974 (we have owned the property since 1999) and when my daughter tried to get smart meters fitted earlier this year she was told that it couldn't be done and that the smart meter fitter had never seen a gas meter that old.

I am going to write back asking for proof of a gas meter exchange, for sight of any contemporaneous gas statements which show the correct meter number, why they used readings and estimates from another meter on our gas account, and when they started using the wrong meter readings/estimates.

My questions are, when did the industry start putting stickers on meters when they exchanged them; and when did BG start putting meter numbers on their bills?

My heartfelt thanks in advance!
