Two phone lines, one a cable...how do I find out which one is which??

Hi, We recently moved and have been trying to have a phone line set up so we can connect up to our broadband account which we have tried to transfer to our new place.
BT have told me that we have two different lines in the flat, one is a cable line...which I suspect is the line upstairs, and the other one is a faulty BT line which will cost £125 to have reconnected to BT and take a few weeks for an engineer. The line upstairs has a dial tone, while the suspected BT one doesnt.
My question is how do I find out what company the cable line is through? Is there a number I can call from the line to connect with that company. Also Is there anyway I can 'Hijack' the cable line to connect with our Virgin media broadband account that we want to transfer from our old place?
Sorry, I'm a little clueless about these things
Thanks for your help

Dial 150 or 100 from the cable line & it'll probably take you through to their customer services (whichever company it may be)0

Lift handset and dial *411# and listen for message. On the BT line, you're setting up Charge Advice. Replace handset.
Make a UK 01/02 call (preferably evening or weekend so it'll only cost 4½p). If the exchange automatically calls you back immediately after the call with the approx cost of the call, that's the BT line.
You can switch off BT Charge Advice with #411#Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
If you dial 17070 on cable what happens?
On a BT line it tells you the telephone number.0 -
You could try calling a friend who has caller identification on their line (or a mobile you have access to). It might show rhe number you are calling from which may give a clue as to the company supplying the line.0

Thanks for your help. I dialled 150 and got in touch with Bull dog, and got our phone number from call recognition from my mobile.
Do you know whether it is possible to re-register with Bull Dog for the phone line but use Virgin media for our broadband through the bulldog phone line? Its just that we are already paying for Virgin broadband which we have been trying to transfer from our previous place.
If its too much hassle I suppose we could cancel the Virgin broadband and go with Bulldog for phone and broad band...what do you all think??0 -

A Bulldog line is really a 'BT line' but connected to Bulldog's own equipment at the telephone exchange.
Bulldog only allow their own ADSL service to be run on 'their' lines (as its connected to their equipment)
Alternatively, you could call BT, ask them to reconnect the line to their equipment (I think this is called 'Return to Donor') and then choose to have an ADSL service from whichever ISP you want.
