I have purchased a second laptop off E Bay. I have connected it to my WiFi OK but it will not connect to the internet. I have run the diagnostic check but is shows nothing. What do I need to do to get a connection for internet/google searches. I have tried entering the common ones like BBC etc. I am hoping I have not brought a dud but before going back to E Bay I want to check it is not me which is quite likely.Thank you

Have you connected to your router name network and put in the password, the laptop may be on the old router of the person it was purchased from.0

More details needed, what have you bought exactly?
What version of Windows is it running? 10? 8? 7? Vista?? XP??
What browser are you running - presumably its Internet Explorer (aka "the big blue E")?0 -
Are you able to connect to the internet from other devices connected to your router e.g. smartphone?0

Running windows 7; On internet explorer which does not connect HTTP404 message. The Laptop is an Old Acer Aspire I have now managed to connect to the internet via Google but not on internet Explorer. How do I get Google Icon on my screen which will make things a lot easier. Can or should I try and update to Windows 10. I am rather a novice so all help is really appreciated. Thank you0

A 404 error is Page not found, that implies the home/start page set is out of date and goes to a website with a page that now doesn't exist.
If you type https://www.google.co.uk into the address bar at the top the website should come up and Google will probably ask you if you want to set it as your hom page.0 -

Whether you should is a personal matter
Even for a "novice" it's all do-able - plenty of folks on here (better than me) who can advise.
First question they will ask is what is the exact make and model pf the machine??0 -

Yes you should. If you don't, over time Windows 7 will become more susceptible to viruses and software support will lessen.
If you're not very confident with IT, it's probably worth paying someone to do it for you, or maybe a relative or friend can do it for nothing.0 -
Windows 7 is officially obsolete by Microsoft from 14 Jan 2020, which means it will no longer receive security updates or hotfixes.0

do this before upgrading to anything.
Press Start, type “system information” into the search box, and then select the result. The System Information window opens, giving you access to all kinds of great information about your PC's hardware and software environment.
Items you want from the left side System Summary. On the right side section is
systems Model
system Type
system SKU
Processor
installed physical memory (ram)
On the left side choose Components, Storage, Disks. On the right side under item,
also note down
Model
Partitions
Size
Partition Size (first big one)
On the left side go up to Network, Adapter. On the right side note down
Name
Adapter Type
Product Type
PNP Device ID Name
