Energy Company and apparent debt

Hi all

about three years ago I moved out of my old address and into my current one. My energy company at the previous address wrote to me at the time advising I owed them close to £900.

I genuinely had no communication, no bills, no phon calls etc. I thought I owed them a small amount, maybe £200 ish (as I'd just moved out after the winter months) so I contact them to ask for evidence. Needless to say this was not forthcoming.

About a year later they passed it over to some solicitors, I again asked them to provide me with evidence of bills etc, they didn't come back to me at all.

So here we are, 18 months later and I get an email and letter from Moriarty Law asking me to contact them. I do, again explain the situation, but as I didnt pass security (refused to give DOB) they refused to give me ANY info. I suggested I wanted to request all my info under GDPR and they said I cant as I didnt pass security. I asked them to ask me other questions - they refused.

Does anyone have any advice? I am not trying to avoid this apparent debt, I just dont feel they have done enough and are now threatening me etc.

Thanks

Why do they say you owe them £900? Is this a case of no meter readings, estimated bills, too low direct debits?

With all due respect if you phone up Moriarty and then refuse to give them any information that lets them into your account, its hardly surprising they won't be of any help. Behaving like that doesn't really help your case in all fairness.
  • I have no idea why they say I owe what I do, which is why I have requested more info, which has taken them three years so far to provide.

The reason I refused to 'behave' that way is because I do not believe the energy company had my DOB, so I believe they are trying to obtain it to then report to the CRA's, and when they are threatening to inform CRA's of the 'debt' anyway, then of course I am going to be sketchy. Plus, having worked in DPA/GDPR environments previously, there is a whole host of questions they could ask to verify me, so perhaps its them who are 'behaving' like that. Just remember, I am not in the wrong here, so hardly worried about it helping my case.

Regardless of my behaviour, I believe they are at fault and have delt with this whole situation appallingly.

DoB should never be used as evidence of identity. It's known by thousands of people - ever heard of birthday cards? Just send a letter to them instead.
  • Thanks, will send them a prove it letter recorded delivery
