Missed a direct debit today

Just noticed on my banking app my direct debit for my car payment bounced today cause I was £14 short. :-( I’m going to ring up tomorrow to pay them, Will this go down as a late payment on my credit file? Praying not as hoping to get a mortgage next year.

Maybe. Possibly not. Call them and pay then ASAP.
  • So Iv called them and made the payment in full. The advisor says they report all accounts at the end of the month. And because Iv paid within 24 hours he doesn’t think it will go down as late. But can’t say for sure, so fingers crossed.

I had a direct debit go unpaid recently on a magazine subscription, I phone them on the day and they said they couldn't do anything until they got a rejection from the bank. I phoned them the day after and they still hadn't received it, I had to wait a couple of days for them to email me.

So I suspect that you should be ok. Did they offer you the chance of paying by direct bank transfer or debit card?
  • The bill due date should be stated on your bill. Often (but not always) the DD is taken a few days early, so you might be okay - but you would need to check with who you owe the money to to be sure

They have the legal right to report it as a late payment if the successful payment was made after the due date, however under the circumstances of contacting them with an explanation and clearing the due amount in reasonable time, there is a good chance that this will not be reported.

If it is reported, it would not hurt to request a removal of it, however 9 times out of 10 this is not accommodated, as information should be kept accurate and accepting such requests would essentially manipulate your record which other lenders rely on to make decisions.

Your history and not your score is whats important since that's what lenders see.
