Hello all. Hope you are all well. Just got a query I need a little help with.
I used to go abroad as a kid a load, and have only just had a new passport (after 20 years without one), so my girlfriend of 6 years and our kids (well hers, but ours ☺️) can go abroad for the first time.
Right here's the problem. My girlfriend can't tell you barely any details about her parents. She's not spoke to her mother in 4 years after a relationship ending fall out, and does not know her date of birth. They had a rocky upbringing that resulted in my girlfriend in care and her father doing 40 years in prison. So obviously she doesn't know his details or have much want to see about him.
What can she do with the passport application process bearing in mind she doesn't know half the information?
Sorry if this is daft, I'm not sure what to do.

She could apply for a copy of her birth certificate for their names, ages etc.0 -
Any other relatives she could ask - grandparents, aunts/uncles?
Otherwise it's trying track down their birth certificates from the information that she has, or phone the passport office to ask for advice. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
Thanks both.
The rest of her rather difficult family are all on her mothers payroll so to speak. She doesn't speak at all to her brother (who's her mom's golden child) and her other sister was so messed up by her fathers actions as a child she converted to Islam and i don't know where she is. They do speak occasionally but I'm sure her sister wouldn't know.
Can you just pop in to the passport office for queries like this? I know there's one in this city.0 -

I know you can go there and take your application in, in person, so can't see why they wouldn't have a 'customer services' desk. If it's not out of your way I'd give it a try but otherwise phone them. Although I think it would be far better if your partner did it herself rather than you telling her story second hand.
Do come back and let us know how you get on.:)0 -
Thanks all.
Don't worry, I'm not being controlling, when we sat down to do her and the kuds passports we came to a shuddering halt and she's prone to just giving it up and saying sod it. I'm just trying to see what can be done so we can go away next year.
Have a good day all.0 -
If she was taken into care, then Social Services should have all her details.
Try them.
Good luck.0 -
She should be able to get a copy of her birth certificate. Her full birth certificate should give her most, if not all the information she needs.
Approach the Registrar where she was born.0 -

If your girlfriend was born after 31/12/82 she will need her mother’s. birth certificate as well as her own full certificate showing parents details on it. Her certificate will only show her mothers name and place of birth so she will need her mothers date of birth to apply for that certificate. There would have been social work involvement if she was in care so she could contact them to see if they have details of the mother then she can apply to the GRO for the birth certificates.
If she was born before 1/1/83 she only needs her own birth certificate and just has to complete the parents details part of the form with whatever information she knows.0 -
There’s no passport office in Birmingham. It’s an interview office and the staff there probably would know much as they don’t examine applications. They just interview first time applicants. Thanks both.
