That'd be Nobel prize territory, but most such claims aren't any more than modern-day alchemy.

Indeed! Theres apparently always a break through new battery around the corner!
But there have been developments in the existing battery chemistries which have led to large reductions in the use of metals like cobalt.
E.g. Tesla batteries have reduced their cobalt content by ~60% and have much lower content of cobalt than other manufacturers (with aims to reduce this even further).
