Home insurance renewal...

Options
Got my quote thru the post other day for Home and Contents for coming year, due in 2 weeks time. Sainsburys 195 quid,up £40 on last year.

Hmmmmm I thought, had alook online, via gocompare ,dozens under £195.. Couldnt see Sainsburys at first.I seemed to recall that Sainsburys were pulling out off Insurance etc (I know they are only acting as a "cover" for another Insurance co).
Anyway, has another look at this long list, via Go Compare, and there they were. Quote for £135 60 quid lower then what they had just sent me !

Dunno if they think I' stooopid or what, but my flabber has never been more gasted !

It's not so much that they think you're stupid, but that you had the new customer discount last year, which has now been removed.

You can ask if they will match it, but normally you would need to move elsewhere for a year.

Some providers have a year one discount. Some phase it out over multiple years.

The product they retail today may not be the same version as they retailed years ago. Some providers have different versions to retail via different distributions. i.e. they lop it a bit of cover off here and add a bit there to suit the target market.

So, price should be looked at in comparison and not by itself.

As with any insurance renewal premium bump - call them and ask to match the new customer quote. IF they won't budge - just swap the insurer. The only insurance that I can think of where switch is not advisable is pet issuance.

Right chaps, we had our Hastings Policy renewal notification last week, they offered us £220 for House and Contents on their Premium Policy, as usual, followed the Home Insurance Guide on this website and can confirm MoneySuperMarket were coming up with lowest quotes for our House.

Whilst Hasting's Premium is certainly not the lowest, MSM gave us a Hasting's quote of £168, with policy quote in hand, rang Hasting Renewals and they made an offer of £163, which made me happy (they offer a decent bells and whistles policy) so renewed with Hastings.

It took less than an hour to check all recommended comparison sites supplied by MSE and phone Hastings with a price far lower than their initial renewal offer. Indeed, we saved £58.00 and our cost, rather surprisingly, was lower than the Premium we paid last year - no Cashback deals for Hastings Home Insurance were available.

Hope this helps, but do advise to follow to the letter the process outlined on this site for renewing Home & Contents insurance.
  • On my home insurance it states that my home is covered if a vehicle hits after speaking to customer service I mentioned what would happen if the driver was not insured insure replied depends on the circumstances.
    Any ideas

Primary advice would be start a new thread for what is a specific and off-topic question.

Easy answer though, home insurance covers you for impact damage in the event of it being hit by a vehicle. Whether or not the driver is insured will have no bearing on your claim (it may impact your insurer's prospects of recovering anything).

(That assumes it's a third party, it could get a bit messy if you or a family member causes the damage and is uninsured!)
