Seeking help directly from lenders

All lenders will say in their T&C of payment chasing letters "please ring us to discuss your account if ever you find yourself in difficulty of meeting payments", or words to that effect.

Does anyone have any experience of dealing with difficult debt this way, or know what kind of help they will/can offer?

I had a problem with paying my Barclaycard for a few months years ago. I phoned up and tried to skip a payment and they could only reduce it by a set percentage. It was obviuous the people on the phone were cannon fodder only doing what the computer would let them (and its worse now as you mainly have to deal with Indian cannon fodder). If you can cover the interest plus a pound or two then phone them and sort something out. If you can't cover the interest then you should talk to CAB (citizens advice bureau) or some other free debt counselling service.

Some banks have a special unit that will deal customers who are having difficulty paying back debt. I think it is by referral only by branch manager only so a visit to your local branch may be better than trying to do something over the telephone.
