Kindle setup for a child?

I'm getting my son a Kindle for xmas, he's 12. What's the best way to set it up, I don't want it linked to my amazon account. So I'm thinking create a new account just for his kindle. But then I thought, how do I make it as easy as possible for his extended family to buy books for him? I could give them the login and password for his amazon account but then my payment card would likely be atached to that account also.
Any thoughts/advice appreciated!

get friends/relatives etc to send gift cards which can then be added to the account for your son to choose what books he wants.Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow..

Has you bought the Kindle yet?
Have you considered a Kobo libra h20 e-reader?
Could save you lots of cash.
As well as buying books from the Kobo store you can also borrow books from many county council libraries for free using Overdrive. Just the same as borrowing physical books. You just have to join, get a user id and pin. My county library allow you to borrow up to 10 books for 3 weeks and on the Kobo version above you can return them early.
To see if your library is online look at your county council web site or search:

The Kobo suggestion to allow access to library books is a good one.
However, if you do opt for a Kindle, the basic Kindle is on offer in its Kindle for Kids guise at £60 right now, includes a case and 1 year sub to Fire for Kids unlimited (which gives some free books but not greatest selection).
Though with any Kindle you can buy it & link it to your own account and just set up an Amazon household which gives you a family library. Then just add your son to it as a child, and this allows you to limit what books he can access from your own kindle library and set other parental controls. See https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201733400
Also, you can now buy individual books on Amazon for another person, and don't need to rely on gift cards. So anyone with an Amazon account can buy books for your son as a gift. When looking at an ebook you will see another box underneath the buy now button, ' Buy for others - Give as a gift or purchase for a group'.0
