Premium Unleaded Petrol

Hi everyone, was just wondering that with the petrol prices continually rising and the per cent variance between the price of normal and premium petrol falling, at what point does it make economic sense to fill my car with premium? I guess my question is how many extra miles should I get from a 40 litre tank filled with premium?

this would probably be better placed in the motoring forum.
To answer your question though......
i don't think you'd gain anything. My understanding is that premium unleaded is for performance or tuned cars and is at a higher octane rating.
On that basis i'd have thought using it instead of regular unleaded would simply be a case of buying more expensive petrol
Some boffin may correct me though

I guess it depends on whether you believe the marketing hype. Having worked for several oil companies, I rarely believe anything they say. I am not suggesting they always tell lies ............ just mostly."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

If you really need a higher octane rating then it's cheaper to buy normal UL and add an octane booster additive when filling up.
I do that with an old "A" series engined Morris Minor which was designed to run on 4 star.0 -
When driving a campervan in Australia on straight roads at solid speeds, we got an extra 10% from premium petrol. Driving around towns we hardly noticed a difference.
But in Oz their regular petrol is only 91 octane and premium is 95-98. In uk regular is 95 and premium goes up to 99 (Tescos) so it would probably be less than 10% over here.0 -
Depending on your car, you may see an improvement in fuel consumption with the use of premium fuels. However, it really is for cars that are designed to run on it with adaptable ECU's that detect the increased RON rating and can adjust the fuelling/timing to take advantage of the increased RON (or MON, for Diesel cars!).
Cars with turbochargers will more than likely see an improvement, although most 'regular' family cars may not.Savings - £18,500 @ 5.22% Average0
