You mention "what happens if she falls ill or injures herself " - the fact is that everybody is immortal and infallible until something happens to them. They breeze through today expecting tomorrow will be the same; enquire about "what if" and you're shot down as weird and negative.

That is how she does it because she believes life to be predictable.

People only change when they know life can be different and start to plan for "differences that might occur in the future".

As for the cost, some people are blessed with adequate incomes and a secure knowledge that if the 5h1t hit the fan they could wave some plastic, or pick up the phone, or just have to wait 2-3 days to payday, so the concept of saving money, of minding the pennies, of being value savvy is wasted on them.

People lead their lives the way they do as they either know no better, or know they don't have to be 100% reliant on their own efforts.

I don't think that's true (apologies if I've read it the wrong way).

I think there are many people on these boards who, for example, shop wisely but aren't doing it because they're short of money or in debt. It certainly applies to me.

I have a good income and good savings which isn't a case of luck or being blessed but because I've worked long and hard for it. For this very reason, I'm not prepared to be ripped off and choose carefully what to spend my hard earned cash on. I think you'll find I'm not alone, just look at the demographic shopping in Aldi.

I have read this thread over the past couple of days and I have to say my reaction has been so what? Initially I thought the OP was concerned as this person "doesn't have many people around than can help her" in the case of illness or injury. I see later though that the person in question works, has a dog and a car. I presume the person also has a phone so could ring for help in an emergency. In fact I then thought that because this person shops every day (as well as walking the dog) she has more chance of someone realising she hadn't been seen for a couple of days than someone like me (for instance) who has no regular routine at all and shops as little as possible, and also finds too much socialising uncomfortable. My saving grace is family and friends would be concerned if I didn't reply to phone calls/texts/e-mails for a couple of days.
So my thoughts tend to be that although the person in question may be spending money unnecessarily (obviously the OP's view as well) but that it is entirely up to her. I do occasionally chat to friends about finances and money saving ideas but not that often, and I try not to comment on other people's lives and habits unless specifically asked - mainly because I don't particularly want them commenting on mine.

Does she need to save money? Most people probably spend money on things others consider unnecessary. If she's happy shopping daily, let her get on with it.

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd probably enjoy popping to the shops every day. It's a bit of exercise and I see a few friendly faces on the way, plus I like shopping!

If you're concerned about emergencies, just ask her what she does if she's ill. She may well have things in that would last a few days. I doubt she buys 2 slices of bread, for example, or 1/8th of a lettuce so her previous days' shopping would probably tide her over until an online shop could be delivered.
