Piling foundations - questions

Hi,
Hopefully there's someone out there with the knowledge I'm looking for - tried googling but doesn't seem to be much out there.
Can anyone explain to me what the process should be for getting quotes on piling for a house extension?
Our architect has said we need 8 x 10m deep pilings due to neighbours leylandii trees.
I've so far contacted 2 piling contractors - one has provided a ballpark estimate but the other is saying that they can't provide an estimate unless I provide the Kilonewton loads for each of the piles.
Our architect tells me that our structural engineer can't provide the design/load for the piling unless we have a sample borehole.
Do I need to get the sample done before the engineer can provide the design?
If I do, is this something piling contractors do as a once-off or is it only done as part of the major build?
If anyone has any informative websites on this topic - please post them too!!!
Thanks

When our extensions was built we needed piles , a small local firm came out and with a core machine sampled the core and gave results to the architect . The same company then did the piles .0

Thanks stef - did the firm charge for taking the sample?0

Yes, they will charge. We paid around £1,000 for our bore holes and a ground make-up and contamination report. The structural engineers then designed the foundations.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Something doesn't make sense here. The load on each pile will be some fraction of the total weight of the extension, regardless of what type of soil you have. In the simplest case, it would be 1/8 of the total weight, but only if the weight was evenly distributed. The structural engineer ought to be able to calculate that.
However, nobody will know how deep the piles need to be without some kind of test drilling. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
