I wanna substitute for artichoke sauce

Hi,
I'm having an early Christmas dinner this Saturday with my parents, before they go away for Christmas. Me and my mum are veggie, and for us I am cooking the savoy cabbage timbale on here : http://www.guardian.co.uk/christmas2004/story/0,,1364898,00.html
Problem is, I have been unable to locate any Jerusalem artichokes for the sauce. I have tried everywhere; one place says they are due to get some in this week, and I am quite hopeful. But if they don't arrive, I need a replacement for the artichoke sauce.
I'm not a very good cook and certainly would be no good at improvising! I was hoping someone could suggest something as a good alternative to the artichoke sauce, so that I can have a backup option if I can't get hold of the artichokes.
Many thanks!

Hi boots_babe,
You should get more help with this on the Old Style board so I'll move your thread across.

I wasn't sure where best to post - so thanks0

Can you use canned artichoke hearts? They're easily available, I think. Alternatively, how about carrot or swede, or a mix of both? Let us know how it turns out.
I like the look of the sprout, ginger and tomato recipe.
Enjoy your meal!

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions. Not sure about the canned artichoke hearts, as Jerusalem artichokes are very different from 'normal' artichokes iyswim, and they don't have a heart so I don't think I could buy it canned unfortunately.
Swede might be an idea, I'll have a scour of the internet see if I can find any nice swede/squash recipes.
Thanks0 -

Sorry Just that when I rang round various shops/supermarkets earlier this week to see if they had any, they barely knew what an artichoke was, let alone the different types lol. Can't say I'm probably that knowledgeable myself as I'm no chef, but I did know this0 -
I think that swede would substitute for Jerusalem artichoke in the recipe, or you could do a tomato sauce instead (nice and bright and Christmasy on the plate) here is Delia's fresh tomato recipe if you want to make something extra special (you won't need the cheese from the ingredient list as you are not making pasta)

This sauce could be made in adavance and reheated0 -
Awwwww...my friend gave me a big bag full of the things last week-end, made soup with some but loads left if you fancy popping over to Yorkshire :rolleyes:0

Seakay - that is an interesting suggestion. I was thinking I needed to get something that would taste vaguely similar to artichoke but then actually I think tomato would be a good option, even though completely different!
Miró - typical eh! No wonder I can't find any, you've got them all0 -
What have I been missing out on I love artichokes... But Iv never heard of artichoke sauce. Please could you post the recipe, If you have time.0
