Edf won’t honour Energy Club deal

Options
I switched my gas/electricity a while ago to EDF through the Energy Club. I chose a particular tariff purely because I did not need to take a smart meter. The wording on the deal was “EDF says it will contact you about getting a smart meter fitted though you can refuse and stay on this tariff”.

EDF have emailed me to say if I don’t agree to have a meter fitted they will cancel my contract and charge me an exit fee.

Has anyone else had this problem and did you manage to keep the tariff without a smart meter being installed?

Was this wording from the CEC or is it in your contract with EDF? If the latter, make a formal complaint and go to the Ombudsman if necessary.
  • Unfortunately, the wording was on the Energy Club deal. I’ve now learned a valuable lesson about reading T&Cs properly. I’m so disappointed that the Energy Club advertised something that was incorrect.

I have literally just had a “chat” with EDF over this. An email received this morning included
“If you don’t take action and book your smart meter installation we will end your contract and charge you an early exit fee of £35 per fuel”

This is what it says in the tariff:

Signing up to this tariff means you are agreeing to have a Smart meter fitted. If you decide you don’t want one, you will have the option to opt out.
I felt their email was threatening and told them so. I have it in my account that I will not be asked about meters for 12 months.

Thanks, that was helpful. Just had an online chat with them and they have opted me out. T&Cs will be reviewed more thoroughly in future.
