Mystery Areas

Good Afternoon,

I was using a steam machine to strip off wallpaper in one of my bedrooms, and in a corner it brought a load of plaster down with it. This exposed what through googling I have now found out to be called "lath and plaster" - horizontal thin wooden struts. Apparently these were used in old houses before gypsum plasterboard was invented.

This area protrudes into the room about 3 foot by 3 foot and is under a sloping ceiling making it about 4 foot high. In between the slats I could feel something soft like loft insulation. It is against the outside house wall on one side and my neighbours' wall on the other.

Does anyone have any idea what the purpose of this closed box could be and if it would be safe to smash it down?

Thanks,

Derek
