How to cash in cheque in USD?

(Sorry if this is the wrong place, wasn't sure where to put this!)
Annoyingly, I recently paid for a hotel in GBP and had a shocking experience with them so claimed for compensation. They gave me a 50% refund, which they provided in the form of a cheque in USD...
I tried to cash this in at Nationwide but they don't accept this and I've only been advised to go to the "cash exchange" shops that take most of the money from your cheque in commission.
Does anyone have any advice/experience with this? If I have to lose half of it to get any money from it I'd rather do that than get nothing at all, I asked the hotel company to provide it in GBP because that's what I paid in but they just flat out refused.

I got a cheque in USD a few years back and was able to pay it into my Nat West account at my local branch, although there was a fee and it did take a while for it to be creditted.
However, it looks like they're stopping this from early next year, and presumably it only works if you're a NatWest customer

I pay US dollar cheques into our HSBC account monthly. Costs £12. That's why I didn't move to nationwide despite the benefits, because the in laws send us foreign cheques that they won't cash.0
