Bedroom Carpet

Hi

Wonder if anyone has tried Tapi Star Twist carpet - it's £4.99m according to website. I don't want to replace it in 3 years' time. Wondering what carpets other people recommend for bedrooms, please.

  • at £4.99 a sqm id imagine the quality to be quite poor.

As you're looking at a twist pile carpet I'd be sure it was a 80/20 wool mix & at least a 40oz weight for a bedroom, you might get away with a 30oz weight for say a spare bedroom. As previous poster mentions, £4.99 sqm indicates it's a very poor quality.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • I am also looking for a bedroom carpet, underlay, grippers.

    1) Would be the range of reasonable price for a bedroom carpet. 22 square metres. I was thinking £10-£20 per square metre?
    2) What would be a reasonable thickness underlay?
    3) What would be a reasonable price for fitting.

I have been looking at carpets for a room approx 5.5 x 3.1 in light brown/beige/gold colour. I was quite taken by one 50oz 80% Pure New Wool, 10% Nylon and 10% Polypropylene. Then another quoter told me that this sort of carpet is difficult to get stains out ... and tried to sell me a much cheaper polypropylene carpet?!!!!’ So I need some impartial advice for a carpet klutz! And maybe it will help the OP!

I'm going the Polypropylene route - having had problems with carpet moths over the past 2 years! The spare bedroom I'm having carpeted is also south facing and the old wool-mix carpets in the house have faded in places. I want hessian-back as I've removed old carpets where the foam backing has turned to dust and it is pretty awful stuff to handle (triggered my psoriasis). I've bought a 12mm deep pile Saxony that feels beautifully soft - Black Friday deal, under £7 per sq m.
I've also opted for 10mm wool/felt underlay instead of PU foam. I've not tried it before and it has had good reviews, although fitters don't like it as it's heavier and more difficult to handle than foam underlay.

A carpet with a high wool content & a very low polypropylene or man made fibre content carpet will definitely NOT be difficult to get stains out of! The worse carpets to remove stains from tend to be those with a high man made fibre content. Polypropylene fibres tend to flatten quickly, so the carpet really isn't suitable for high traffic areas, though would be fine in a bedroom. My carpet of choice is always a 80/20 wool mix twist pile as they tend to keep their good looks for a very long time.

The 50oz wool carpet you are taken with is suitable for heavy domestic, so fine for all rooms & stairs. Go for the best underlay you can afford, something like Cloud Nine or Tredair & buy this & any other accessories such as gripper online as you'll save a small fortune compared to buying from a carpet shop.

I'm not sure of fitting cost, when I moved here I found a semi retired Master carpet fitter living in my area from National Insitute of Carpet & Floor Layers website, https://www.nicfltd.org.uk/
& I think I paid no more than £125 for the fitting in 2 bedrooms & a lobby.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

  • Can anybody recommend any good, cheap online retailers for carpets, underlay and grippers. I'll be doing the fitting myself.

I used onlinecarpets.co.uk - free samples sent by 1st class post. Like a lot of things, there is a fairly limited range of popular colours/types and they are rebranded by different retailers and sold at a variety of prices! Order samples to compare. Underlay varies a lot in price and quality, cheap unbranded stuff may be a false economy. I bought thick wool felt underlay (Wilsons), which my fitter hadn't used before and he thought it was more difficult to lay, but seemed to give very good "lift". I used an ebay outlet for that. He supplied gripper and door bar but they seem readily available at lots of outlets, it might be cheaper to buy at the same time as other goods if you get free postage.
