Car Battery

I have some money saved, and need a new car battery, I do about 3K miles/year and battery is not great in winter, but due to the rural area and needs, I think I may need to replace my battery, local friendly garage has quoted £100 any recommendations?

get a trickle charger for such a low mileage. You don't say what car you have but a decent battery is around £70 for a derv car and easy to fit yourself.
Look at a local motorfactors or online

I recently bought a battery from Eurocarparts Ebay site.
It was 20% cheaper than on their main site even after adding in their current discount code.

It was all simple, use their main site to check which battery is needed, search their Ebay site for the same battery, then click & collect through Ebay, they'll even deliver it.

Fitting yourself should be fairly easy, but if in doubt I'm sure there'll be guides on the web that show you how to do your make and model.
  • Thanks, its a focus, I live in a flat so getting power is not easy.
I try to save money where I can but I guess since its a real necessity, I should really just go with my local garage, he makes a few quid, I dont fret about appointments I need to go to.
Thanks for answering a silly question. its appreciated
  • Last battery I bought was £35 from GSF, DriveTec brand, same as you'd get from Quick-Sh*t, seems fine.

I used to have a Jaguar XJ8 and did 3000 miles a year for 16 years. After I'd had it a year the dealer reported that the battery had a weak cell so I got them to install a new battery. That battery was still going strong when I sold the car 15 years later. I never charged it from an external source and never topped it up and I couldn't even see what make it was as it was tucked well down in its compartment. Just shows that low annual mileage isn't necessarily a killer.

Ah is an abbreviation for ampere-hour, or amp-hour. This describes the charge capacity of a battery, or how much current can be delivered at a constant rate as the battery is depleted over the course of one hour.

Keep him on his toes. Ask him what Ah hour it is. This one is 52Ah
You could get a 50-65 Ah, less than 50Ah is quite low.

I like the fact that that battery ad quotes the "cold cracking amps". That's a new one ....must be a cracking battery.

You can get solar-powered trickle chargers that can help out in that situation, though you'd have to think about how to connect one to the battery. They come with lighter socket adapters, but you'd have to check whether your car has one, and if it is "live" when the ignition is off. I have one on my classic car while it's not being used, and put crocodile clips on the wires instead, but that's not always convenient for a car parked somewhere.
